Moves can be time-consuming, stressful, expensive, and frustrating. But they don’t have to be. All you need to do is plan ahead. Many homeowners believe that by moving on their own, they can save time and money while taking the stress of choosing the right company out of the picture.

Text: If you are residing in Dubai and looking to send your shipment to your loved one back in Pakistan, then Pakistan Cargo is solution to your moving needs.

However, not all moves are created equal. In many cases, trying to “go it alone’ could turn into a serious disaster. No matter how big or small, making choices is a part of every single move. To make sure your move goes smoothly, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of DIY moving.

  • Advantages of Moving on Your Own
    • 1. Full Control
    • 2. Cost-Effectiveness
    • 3. Convenient Time
  • Disadvantages of Moving on Your Own
    • 1. Too Much Time
    • 2. Excess effort
    • 3. Unexpected Costs
    • The Takeaway

Advantages of Moving on Your Own

Let’s start with the benefits of handling your own move.

1. Full Control

When you are moving on your own, you have full control of timing, choice of packing materials, truck size, assistants, and much more.  You don’t have to worry about the moving company making some unfortunate mistake and ruining your favorite vase.

You get to control the entire process and make changes according to your needs. For some people, such a feeling of control can be highly soothing amidst the extensive stress of a large move.

2. Cost-Effectiveness

If you don’t hire professional movers to handle your relocation, it’s possible to cut costs. In case you are planning a large move, moving expenses can be substantial. With a DIY move, you can find used packing materials (like boxes from U-Haul Exchange), ask friends to assist you, and rent a cheap truck.

With the right approach, it’s possible to make your move less expensive. However, you need to remember to take care of such aspects as moving insurance to prevent costly consequences.

3. Convenient Time

When you move on your own, you can pick the most convenient time for yourself. When you work with movers, you have to worry about the high season and busy teams. With a DIY move, you are your own boss.

However, you have to remember that you have to adjust your plans to the timing of the truck rental company and the schedule of your assistants.

Disadvantages of Moving on Your Own

The key disadvantages of moving on your own include:

1. Too Much Time

Even if you’ve moved before, moves can be time-consuming. Without professional assistance, they can take a tremendous amount of time. You have to do all the planning on your own, coordinate the process with your assistants, hire the moving truck, arrange packing, and much more.

If you work with a professional moving company, they take care of all the moving needs, leaving you sufficient time to make personal arrangements.

2. Excess effort

Moving on your own usually requires lifting heavy stuff. Even if you ask friends and family for help, it’s highly unlikely they have too much experience in moving heavy items. According to the experts from Torex Moving, professional movers undergo special training to make sure they don’t hurt themselves during the move.

If one of your assistants injures themselves during a move, you could be facing a personal injury lawsuit.

3. Unexpected Costs

While you may think that you are saving money by DIYing, you could be incurring unexpected costs instead.

  •         Damaged items – if you damage something during the move, you are fully responsible for it. Consider getting moving insurance to minimize the expenses.
  •         High packing costs – if you don’t have sufficient experience in packing, you could spend too much money on supplies.
  •         Delays – if you are asking friends, family, or co-workers to help, you have to be ready for unexpected delays. They could result in extra truck rental costs.

Overall, you may end up spending more time and money on a DIY move than you would on professional movers.

The Takeaway

If you are planning to move on your own, you need to spend some time figuring out a variety of nuances. While a DIY move may seem cheaper, it could end up more expensive and time-consuming than a professional move.

Weigh all pros and cons of moving on your own before making a decision. While a small DIY move could turn out to be fine, a sizable move usually requires professional assistance.
